Domain Monetization

Friday, August 29th, 2008

I’d like to start this post out by saying that I haven’t mastered the art of domain monetization, but I have been fortunate enough to use a few of the services out there to know which work for me.  Perhaps this will help you during your hunt for finding a good service to park your domains at.  When it comes to domain monetization I hear some of the older domainers saying that it’s just not how it used to be.  Yesterday, infact I came across a gentleman at my Los Angeles Hosting Group meeting who happened to be a developer and a domainer.  He mentioned the days of selling domains for good money, now he was kind of scrambling around to find out how he could best monetize some of the domains he registered several years ago with the least effort possible.  I mentioned that he could probably benefit from using one of the following services:

NameDrive (I am a frequent user of this domain parking service.)
Sedo (I used to utilize sedo, now I only use them for the auction portion if needed.)
Parked (Never used the service, but I have heard great things about them.)

I haven’t made much directly from domain monetization services like the ones listed above, but I have found them convenient for gathering statistics on a domain, without having to do much of anything.  NameDrive has been a great resource for me.  I have sold a couple of domains based solely on the stats / earnings that I have generated having my domains parked at NameDrive.  I pretty much use this parking service as a means of jumpstarting interest on a domain and showing interested parties that there is potential in a given domain.  I was able to sell multiple domains over domainstate and namepros using the following method:

1.  I would park a domain at NameDrive for a few months, normally interested buyers that I have dealt with want to see at least a three to four month track record for a given domain name.  You will scare a great deal of buyers away if you are not able to provide this.

2.  Once you have had the domain parked at the service for a while, start to put the buzz out there on forums such as dnforums, domainstate or namepros.  Let people know that you have a domain name which is potentially generating both revenue and traffic stats.

3.  After putting some buzz out there about your domain, post in the sales section that you are looking for offers on each forum.  Make sure you post in the proper section which normally pertains to the type of domain you have, for example if you have a domain receiving 5,000 uniques a month this would normally be considered a traffic domain, so post accordingly.  While posting make sure to take a screen shot of your earnings for the past three to four months.  Here is an example of a screenshot that I had taken for a domain that I recently sold:  http://i30.tinypic.com/160wvnd.jpg

If you are unsure of how to take a screen shot, simply open your browser window to your domain parking services stats area and click the “Print Screen” button on your keyboard.  I normally use Adobe Photoshop to paste my screen shots into, if you don’t have this program use Microsoft Paint, which is readily available on most windows based platforms.  From Paint you can paste your screen shot into the program and crop it as needed.  Once you have done this save the file in a web format like JPEG and simply upload this file to a image hosting service.  I tend to use tinypic.com because it is simple and always works for me. :)

4.  Next step is to be patient and wait a while for the offers to build up on your domain.  You will most likely be contacted via PM or replies within the thread you posted.  Make sure to be attentive, but don’t drive yourself crazy checking every hour of the day if someone has posted an offer or has expressed interest in the domain.  Keep in mind most people contacting you in regards to a domain via a forum will try and low ball you or waste your time.  You want what I have called the 2 percenters, these are the ones that purchase the domains swiftly.  When I say swiftly they don’t ask much as far as questions are concerned, because the stat screen shots do the talking for them.

5.  Once one of these swift domainers come flying by, make sure to ground them for a bit.  Allow them to chase you!  This is where the fun comes in, you can tell one domainer that you received an offer from another at whatever that price may have been!  Sometimes you will get money that day, simply by doing this.  They feel pressured to buy the domain and in the end it is business so the domain should go to the highest offer.  Once you receive an offer that suits your needs, use one of the many services out there to collect your money.  If a domain is lower than $300 dollars, feel free to use Paypal, I have done this many of times and have not had a problem.  If a domain is in the realm of $500 or above, I would look to utilize some sort of escrow service.  Escrow.com is a site that comes to mind!  Great service and reasonably priced, best of all your money is in good hands and doesn’t pose a potential risky investment if someone does abide to the rules you have set.

Anyhow, I hope this helps a great deal of you out there.  When I started domaining several years ago it was a total blur and guides like this were always shaping the way that I conducted business.  Enjoy the holiday weekend!

Best Regards,

Jason Thompson

Good Domainer

Monday, August 25th, 2008

I am sure there are a number of good domainers out there but in today’s post I have decided to focus on one.  To much of my amazement I ran into this site while browsing a number of sites about domaining.  That point wasn’t amazing but the next point is. =)  This domainer actually helps those who read his blog, he is open to providing tips and tricks to them on an individual basis.  I found his blog quite informative myself and feel he deserves recognition for doing such an amazing job.  If you are wondering which blog I am referring to, I am about to reveal it now:

URL Academy

The domainer’s name is Andy, not sure about his last name but he has an interesting perspective on domaining which deals with manually registering domains and caring less about drops and auctions.  I for one am quite versatile when it comes to building a domain portfolio.  I have found gems on drops and have also sold a few domains that were registered manually for XXX amount of dollars.  One thing that I haven’t participated much in are auctions.  I picked up a domain a while ago at a snapnames auction entitled:

sirloins.net

Now that I think about it, there wasn’t actually an auction, it was simply a domain which no one else had bid on that I felt had value.  Luckily for me I was able to grab it for $60.  I’ve participated on pool.com for a few domains in the past, but I don’t think those really entered the auction phase either!  One of my gems which was quickly snagged up a few years ago due to my negligence was proxynames.com, yes I owned a gem of this caliber as well as a few that bring forth bad drop memories or shall I say nightmares!  All in all my entire point for bringing this up is each domainer within this wonderful world of domaining brings a fresh new perspective in which we can all learn from and Andy does just that!

I think I will contact Andy for a link exchange in the near future. ;)

Relaxing on Saturday

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Relaxed today and told myself to spend as much time away from the computer as possible.  Lately I have noticed that between my day job and the individual projects that I have, there seems to be a great deal of time spent on computers.  This has lead to a weird tightness in my neck, although I run two to three times a week I have still noticed that this tightness has formed.  I will be looking for a message therapist in the next few days to help with this problem.  Unfortunately, this is one of the many sidafects of the profession that I love.

Note to self:  This entry was a little late, but it was for a good reason. :)  I spent some time with my father and good friends today.  Staying away from the computer is a tough task, but one many of us should start to master.  Automation is the key to current day survival, I will get into this concept in a future post.

Namepros Wanted Ad Update

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

I’ve received a number of responses in regards to my forum and talk domain wanted ad that I posted on August 19th, but only a couple of them have any potential for development. I’ve asked the member who posted golferforum.com to private message me with a price, but there has been no attempt to do so. This member is missing out on an offer that could make them very happy. This brings me to a point of why you need to be as accessible as possible when dealing in the domain industry. If a person has no means of contacting you or all of your lines of communication lead to dead ends, then your loss is another person’s gain. My interest in golferforum is starting to wear down as I can proceed to approach the owners of golfingform.com or golfertalk.com which would probably fit my low XXX budget for such a domain. To the member SearchingTV on namepros, if you ever get a chance to read this post, my interest in your domain is slowly dieing down, so please take the time to PM me as stated in the thread otherwise I will have to move forward with acquiring a similar domain to fit that niche from someone else!

All the Best,

Jason Thompson

Los Angeles Domaining Group

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Today has been quite a productive one thus far.  I had been comtemplating for a while whether or not to start a domaining group on meetup.com and finally went ahead and did so.  This is my way of developing a social network in one of the industries I value the most.  With this meetup organization I want everyone to share their experiences with one another along with any tricks of the trade.  The domaining industry is one of the most unique sectors out there and I am glad to be part of such an industry.  For more information on this group:

Gas Prices: Why I am a rebel

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

After going through the normal routine today at the house, I proceeded to hop into my SUV.   As the car started, I noticed that the gauge was set on empty and off to the local gas station I go!  I pulled up to the pump and decided to be a rebel today.  You may ask to yourself, what does being a rebel at a gas station consist of, well lets say my ML320 is only supposed to take premium gasoline and I decided to fill the entire tank up with regular.  A total of 16.006 gallons cost me $64.01, compared to the $63.88 for 15.213 gallons that I spent on the 18th simply filling up with premium gas.  To my shock I only filled up three days ago and was already on empty once again.  I can thank dropping my girlfriend to work in West Covina, then proceeding to pick her up and dropping her home again for that. LOL!  Its the least I could do as she spent the night over at my place on Tuesday and we were cutting it close Wednesday morning while driving her back to her place.  To make a long story short instead of dropping her all the way to her place in Monrovia we decided taking her straight to work in West Covina would be a better idea, as she would of been late for work.  This good deed was quite costly for me, as it burned up a great deal of gas.

I’m actually now seriously thinking about purchasing a more fuel efficient car, since I do commute a ways to get to where I currently work.  I also might try taking the bus for a few days to see if this would be a more efficent way to commute.  Whatever ends up happening I’ll make sure to keep everyone updated.

Jason Thompson
