My Commitment

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

I made a commitment to update this forum everyday, regardless if there was a great deal of information to write about or not.  Since it is still 11:55pm here on the west coast I have still followed through with this commitment.  It feels good to make a small goal and reach it.  I want this blog to be a great resource for those interested in the domain world to benefit from.  I just got back from viewing a bunch of offers on namepros in regards to a posting that I made about forum and talk domains.  You can view the thread I made here:  http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?p=2997101#post2997101

Anyhow, it is getting late and I am going to relax by playing a quick online game of NBA Live 2008.  Until next time!

Just Registered: CitizenshipTalk.com

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Just completed the registration of CitizenshipTalk.com at GoDaddy.  I registered the domain for a total price of $7.15 using the GoDaddy coupon code OYH3, this code takes $3.00 per .com off that you register.  In my opinion with all of the immgiration talks going on within the United States this domain is extremely valuable.  Now the only decision left for me is to either put it on the market or establish the site as an informative message board for those who have questions on the topic.  I was able to locate an interesting site called immigrationportal.com and I can now see what it will take to develop such a site.  If I do decide to develop the site I will use immigrationportal.com as my skeleton for doing so.  Anyhow, back to domaining I go!  lets see what hidden gem I am able to find next.

I want to thank my virtual assistant for providing me with the spreadsheet that said CitizenshipTalk.com was actually avaiable to register. :)  They after all did the majority of the research for me.  Here are some other domains you might find interesting that they have found available to register:

Dental Appointment

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Today I actually had a dental appointment scheduled for 10:30 am PST.  I was pretty excited about this appointment and made sure I was at the dental office located in Marina Del Rey on time.  Since I was a new patient I figured there would be a delay with the appointment time which there was.  This delay lasted a great deal longer than expected.  The lady at the front desk was extremely nice and kept apologizing on the wait.  Once they called my name and ushered me into the back room of the dental office I was scheduled to have x-rays performed on my teeth by a dental assistant.  I must admit the time it took to have the x-rays done was quite a pain and continually opening my jaw and tilting my head was quite annoying.  The lady that performed this procedure for me was sweet, so I shook it off.  Next was the wait for the dentist to actually see me, he came into the room, introduced himself and it was off to the races.  After looking in my mouth and determining that there was nothing wrong with my teeth he proceeded to tell me about “invisalign” and why it would be good for me to get it.  The only problem here was that he didn’t truly take the time to explain to me what invisalign actually was, but ended up handing me a brochure and a portable dvd player to listen to the promo.  All of a sudden I felt like I was in an infomercial.  He told me that while I watch this promo, that he would check on my insurance policy to see what they would cover in regards to this.  After the promo was over and sitting in the seat for quite a bit of time for him to come back, he enters the room with a quote sheet.  This sheet showed that invisalign would cost me $6,000 and my insurance would only cover $1,000 of this total.  At this point I am starting to look at my dentist more and more like a sales man, as he proceeds to mention that he is one of the top providers for the invisalign brand.  This made me feel even more uncomfortable and I told him that I would have to think about it.  He leaves the room and another lady comes in.  She is what I will refer to as the “closer.”  She asks me what I would like to end up signing up for.  I told her I would have to consult my mother and father about this first as they are both doctor’s.  She didn’t like this answer, plus I ended up telling her that I want to look into my medical insurance a little further to see if I could get complete coverage for such a service.  She proceeded to tell me that my insurance was great!  This made me really skeptical and I said I have to end up going and bolted towards the doorway.

My entire point for writing about this story is to show how poor our health care system here in the United States actually is.  It’s no different from buying a car on a used car lot!  I literraly felt like I was being taken advantage of the entire time, because no one seem to actually care about me as a person.  Anyhow, I am going to get back to work here and ponder a little more about what happened.

Jason Thompson

Business Assistant

Monday, August 18th, 2008

In the last week or so I have been interviewing various assistants to take care of some of my business needs.  When the word assistant is heard most think I am shelling out a ton of money to have someone in-house answer the phones, schedule client meetings, etc…  This would be the case but my assistant is located on the other side of the world in India.  These types of assistants have been labeled virtual assistants since they tend to communicate with you via the Internet.  I actually hired a virtual assistant after reading, “The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich” by Timothy Ferriss.”  This is an excellent read that I would advise any entrepreneur to get. (My ex-girlfriend actually purchased this book for me as a Christmas present last year.  Some of the best tools come from those you would least expect!)  In the book, he describes how you can consolidate a work week into just a few hours.  I took his advice and went on elance to test the waters with a virtual assistant.  So far, my virtual assistant has not fulfilled the obligations that I have outlined for them.  It’s unfortunate but I am giving them the benefit of the doubt for now because it was a holiday weekend in India this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The tasks I have set for my personal assistant are the following:

1. Research domains that end with the word “forum” and “talk” on www.justdropped.com. An example reference would be: carforum.com or cartalk.com, I want you to create your own justdropped.com account and conduct searches to find domains which have just been dropped from the registrar. To do this you would visit justdropped.com and type the forum or talk entry into the ends with box. Make sure to only search domains which end with (.com) as those are the only ones which I am interested in. Once you have conducted the search create a spreadsheet with the following fields: Domain Name, Currently Available, Archive.org History

From here I want you to go to the following site: http://www.moniker.com/domains/batch_reg.jsp

At this site you will paste any of the deleted domains which you have found in the previous step to find out which are currently available. If a domain is currently available please mark the domain in the spread sheet with a “YES.” For the domains that are not currently available please mark the domain in the spread sheet with a “NO.” For each domain in the list I would like for you to run each individually through archive.org and mark “YES” in the spreadsheet for those which have historical references and “NO” for those domains which do not have any historical references.

Once you have completed this make sure to save the spread sheet with the exact notation = YEAR.MONTH.DAY.FORUMDOMAINS, example: 2008.08.13.FORUMDOMAINS.XLS

*Skip any domains you may have already searched on previous days. All domains in each list should be unique.

Have these emailed to me daily at jason@eightmotives.com

Estimated Time To Complete: (15 - 30 Minutes Daily)

Please have these sent to me by 7AM (PST) each day.

2. Research a list of data centers located within the United States. Start with California and proceed forward from the West to the East until all states have been covered. Find out each data center name, location, company ownership and email / phone, fax number. Please create a spread sheet with your findings. Utilize the major search engines like google.com and forums on web hosting like webhostingtalk.com and datacentertalk.com to gather this information. Here is an example search conducted on google:

Key Word: Los Angeles Data Center
Returns www.ix2.net
Company Name: IX2 Networks
Location(s):
One Wilshire
624 South Grand
Los Angeles, CA 90017
Floors: 16th and 3rd
Email: sales@ix2.net & info@ix2.net
Phone: (866)600-2800
Phone: (213)542-0100
Fax: (213)542-0104
Additional Information:

IX2 Wilshire operates approximately 5,000 square feet of collocation space on the 16th and 3rd floors of One Wilshire and has a large presence in the 4th floor meet-me room. The One Wilshire Building was built in 1966 but the infrastructure has been renovated over the years to be able to accommodate the needs of telecommunication companies with respect to power, air-conditioning, emergency power and connectivity requirements. With more than half of the building’s tenant base in the telecommunications industry, today One Wilshire is considered the premier hub of the Pacific Rim and is one of the most important points of connectivity within the Western United States.

*Make sure not to copy additional information exactly how it is listed on the site. Change at least two to three words in each entry.

Estimated Time to Complete (30 minutes - 1 Hour Daily)

Email this list daily to me jason@eightmotives.com by 9AM (PST) each day. More tasks will be added.

These tasks are quite basic and are meant to test how efficient my virtual assistant team is.  I currently pay my virtual assistant $5.00 / hour.   I understand that at this rate, there might be issues with work being completed properly.  So far they have completed one spread sheet for Thursday of last week, which details the domains that I requested for them to research.  I am still waiting for data pertaining to data centers within the United States.  This data is actually for a new directory that I will be establishing in the next couple of months.

My virtual assistant team has apologized for the delays and said that they would pick the pace up.  This is pretty much a paid interview at the moment and budgeting $100 to test their services wouldn’t be much of a loss.  I have found other virtual assistants that are within the range and a company called Brickwork for India which assigns you a professional virtual assistant.  I look forward to see how much time I can save during the day by utilizing a virtual assistant.  This is a learning curve for the majority of them, so I will give it some time before everything runs flawlessly and the information I have requested is in my inbox on a timely matter.

Kind Regards,

Jason Thompson

Weekends For Family

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Saturday evening was spent celebrating the first birthday of my little nephew.  We drove up to my cousin’s house in Carona, California and had a great time catching up with the family.  When I say we, I am referring to my girlfriend and little brother.  While up there we viewed the Olympics on television and watched the 26th mile run won by a Romanian.  She had an incredible pace and continued to run for her victory lap.

This brings me to my main point.  The time you spend with family is quite important.  Although business is always on my mind, I have learned to curve my thought process to think only about family when time has been reserved to do so.  In this fast paced world of Internet business it sometimes is quite difficult to reserve time for your personal life.  Not to sound like a motivational speaker, but you can actually motivate yourself more in business when a solid personal life has been built.  During the time I was in Carona, sure I could of missed certain business opportunities which could of taken the shape of selling a few domains here and there, but the time missed would of been priceless.  It would of been an event that I could never recover and business will always be there regardless.

Although I would like to type a little more, I have to get ready for Sunday.  My girlfriend is still asleep and I want to suprise her with breakfast.  I also need to help her move a few things at her house today.  I hope everyone is enjoying a great weekend!

Best Regards,

Jason Thompson

Lets Begin The Journey

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

I have chosen to create a blog which details my journey as an Entrepreneur based in Los Angeles, California.  The wonderful city of angles has been one roller coaster ride after another for me.  My outlet during these times is this blog and I have made a commitment to detail my experiences here for the world to see.  Whehther you are just starting out or are a pro in your select field, I am sure you will enjoy the writings of a person who makes goals and achieves them by not letting anything stand in his way.

Enough with the hype, lets get down to business.  The first question some may ask is who am i?  I’m just another young 20 something year old that thinks he knows everything about life.  A hotshot who graduated from a small historically black school in Virginia known as Hampton University. (B.S. Computers Information Systems)  A hotshot who was checked reality wise by a number of teachers…But it gets even better, during the Summer of 99 I attended a program at Xavier University in New Orleans.  Although I completely bombed the summer program grade wise, I was awarded a scholarship for exploiting all of the administrator accounts both on the Linux and windows based servers which provided the first wall of security for the school.  Since my grades during this period of time were amazingly low, the faculty was not able to provide a scholarship large enough to keep me at the school and that’s where Hampton came into play.

During the first semester at Hampton, new friends caught glimpse of a “Computer Geek Gone Wild.”  I remember one of our first meetings as a Freshman class in Ogden Hall.  A team of people responsible for our Internet connectivity and overall campus network sat on stage misinforming us one question at a time.  They talked to the student community as if we were completely ignorant and had no idea of what they were saying.  You can say I had enough!  When a question from a student was asked on accessing an America Online account from the campus’s network, one panel member said it was not possible.  I raised my shaven head and decided to step towards the microphone and said passionately that AOL can indeed be accessed using the TCP/IP protocal.  For those that are in the know, this is a little triumph indeed.  On the contrary for those who were actually part of that Freshman class it was an amazing feat.  I had never in my life felt the way I felt at that moment, roars from every direction peaked the audotroium and those who knew my name chanted it in sequence!  Yes I am a geek and loved every bit of it!

College was an interesting experience for me.  When my mother passed away I struggled to find my way out of college and had the hardest time coping with her passing.  She left me an inheritance which I immediately paid off all of my school debt with, saved some for the future, spent a little having fun and put the rest into several different investment / business opportunities.  I soon began to take a liking to penny stocks and had no idea what to expect once I started within that field.  I ran into a few frauds like CMKX and QBID, for those who recognize those symbols its unfortunate what happened with those companies.  Although CMKX folded, I saw my investment increase $20,000 within a three day period of time!  I was an adrenaline investor and did not know when to exit.  I called a good buddy into my room, as I was renting from him!  He saw proof of how quick money is made, with my etrade portfolio account open on my desktop.  He couldn’t believe his eyes.  The next day or two the stock dropped hard and I was lucky to exit with $10,000+ in hand.  To make a long story short this was risky business and it was something that taught me a lesson as I lost just as much money as I made!

I started businesses in college, one which I purchased used software and resold it at premium aftermarket prices.  I built computers for fellow students, made rounds fixing computers and started hosting companies.  All I enjoyed but it was never really what I truly enjoyed.  But soon I would find the domaining industry, an industry which outperformed the stock market in every way!  Fast forward to today and I am building my domain empire one domain at a time.  Not to discredit anyone in this industry (loved the word so much that I had to purchase this domain off someone at namepros) but there are a great deal of pessasmist out there.  It is true that a small percentage of people who participate in the wonderful world of domaininng are making little to no profit.  Some just consider it a hobby, I personally consider it an investment.

In future posts I will detail recent purchases I made and how I was able to register StarCraftTalk.com for less than $10.00 since I tend to watch the domain drops quite closely.  I will also talk about how you can outsource your domaining habit to others for a couple of dollars per hour, saving your time, health and money without having to be on the computer at all hours of the day.  Let others do the work for you!

Warm Regards,

Jason Thompson
