Sold a Domain? Check on your buyer!

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

So you’ve been browsing around the domain forums for a while and went ahead and decided to post that wonderful domain that you registered a few months ago. Within seconds you receive a few replies expressing interest in the domain. Everything from, what registrar the domain is currently registered with to does it receive any traffic or revenue? One of the offers is one that you can’t resist and the buyer follows your directions by sending payment immediately to your paypal account. You’ve received payment and pushed the domain to your buyer’s domain account. VICTORY! It’s time to celebrate, you’ve accomplished your goal and now it’s time to move onto the next domain right?

WRONG, there are way to many domainers that operate in this fashion on a day to day basis. We tend to forget that one of the biggest incentives we can receive within a transaction can actually occur after we have sold the domain. By following one simple rule! Check on your buyer! Yes, how many of you can say that you have actually done this? Since the majority of our business is conducted within a virtual world, we tend to drive ourselves off of the money which enters our online accounts and not customer satisfaction. For most of the domainers out there, we simply forget about the buyer and continue to play the domain game.

I personally feel that if a person purchases a domain from your portfolio once, they are more than likely to do it again. Follow the following rules:

1. After a transaction, simply send an email or PM to the buyer simply thanking them for the purchase. Also in this email express that if they need anything feel free to contact you. Make sure to provide an email and a phone number. You are laying the foundation for a business relationship and a repeat purchase, by doing this.

2. After two to three weeks, simply send an email or PM checking in on the buyer. Perhaps ask a question which pertains to the domaining world. A great question would be, how are things going with your domain portfolio lately? This is the perfect question to ask, because it will provide a line of communication which will let you know whether the domainer wants to proceed forward with the business relationship. If they answer the question, you are ready to roll! Don’t be discouraged if they don’t answer the question. If this happens, simply move on and proceed to the next step regardless.

3. After a month or so send another message, which states that you might have a few domain names that would be of interest to the buyer. No need to list the domains in your line of communication. You don’t want this to appear as a SPAM message. You want to effectively communicate that there could be a potential that another domain might be suitable for the buyer’s portfolio. Everyone likes personal attention and if this is done correctly this will spark interest and the buyer will ask what the domains are. Only move to step four if the buyer expresses interest.

4. If the buyer expresses interest, you simply jump back into sales mode and provide the information that the buyer has requested. Provide a few of the domains which you feel are suitable for the buyer’s portfolio. All of a sudden you have opened up lines of communication for a second sale to take place. If the domains do interest the buyer, they will have no problem with forking over the money needed for the second transaction.

These four steps work quite well. I’ve been fortunate enough to utilize these steps in past transactions, paving the way for repeat customers. Simply checking on your buyer unlocks a wealth of potential.

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ.COM

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

For kicks, I wanted to register the alphabet (TLD). To my surprise, this domain was taken in .com, .net and .org! I definitely had to laugh, when I found this out. Not only are the domains registered, but they are also being monetized with landing pages!!! Heck, this could be a great pick up line at a bar.

Lady at Bar: “So what do you do for a living?”

Domainer: “I own the alphabet.”

Lady at Bar: “Oh, Wow! That’s quite funny!”

Domainer: “Yah, it sounds funny but I sell more soup then campbells!”

To the owners of those fine alphabet domains, cheers!  Here’s to you kiddos!

Best Regards,

Jason Thompson

PS: Now I know my ABC’s!

NamePros Auction Tomorrow October 16, 2008

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

I’m quite excited, as the infamous NamePros auction is being held tomorrow. I’m not really interested in the domain names being auctioned off, but I am interested in the community that gathers during these times. It’s a great time to have a bit of fun while bidding against fellow NamePros members. The community comes alive as members are given the opportunity to bid on all types of domains. For those of you who will be participating in this auction, I’ll see you in the chat room tomorrow!  I might even sneak a few bids in myself.

Best Regards,

Jason Thompson

PS:  It’s also my girlfriend’s birthday!  Looks like I might be a bit tied up tomorrow! LOL!

Domaining Blog Adds Character

Friday, October 10th, 2008

So Rick Schwartz has a bobble-head.  It definitely looks like domaining is taking a couple of steps forward into the limelight.  In celebration of this wonderful bobble-head phenomenon I have decided to add a little character to the new discredit.org design.  I contacted a good friend of mine who is one of the best artist’s I have ever come across.  He was more than happy to draw a cartoon based image of what he felt was a good portrayal of me as a domainer in the animated world.  Are you ready to see the first sketch he has come up with?  Your in for a treat, because here it goes:

Now that is one domaining geek gone wild!  He has me fully equipped with a sword from halo.  This can be looked upon as being the sword which is slashing through domain registries all across the internet.  (Hey I tried!) My buddy Byron is a talented artist and I like when he adds his own bit of creativity to drawings that he works on for me.  He said he should have it inked up and colored in within the next few days.  Ofcourse I am paying him for this, but he is definitely worth every cent!  This is my first attempt to make domaining a bit cooler and to poke a bit of fun at myself at the same time.  :)

They Came They Saw They Got Distracted

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

As the old quote goes, “they came, they saw, they conquered” I didn’t quite get to the conquered portion.  It was a slow day at work, so I decided to hop on one of my favorite sites “justdropped.com” and began searching for a few domain names.  After running into a few drops for forum based domains that did not catch my eye, I went ahead and started searching outside of the typical scope that I have set for myself.  Danger!  You have entered the toxic lands of your thought process going wild.  Where in the world did my focus go?  It went right out of the window, but then again for those of you that read this posting and see what I have registered, you might actually think that it made complete sense.  The number 4 does that ring a bell, well it sure did for me as it can be interpreted in many different ways.  I saw the number 4 as being a position holder for he word FOR.  Then it came time for the power abbreviation, the letter n and the letter y.  The first thing that came to mind was new years and new york.  The next thing that came to mind was where to find a Godaddy coupon code so I could register this gem.  I logged into my gmail account and located the last email that Godaddy sent entitled “Domain Special: Order now and SAVE 10%!”  Are you wondering what this code is?  Since I am a nice guy here it goes: gdp1006p

Back to the story, I was amazed that again no one had registered such a domain.  The value for the domain for me is not the fact that it is three characters, it stands in the fact that the letters ny have such a deep meaning within our American culture.  The domain is so easy to remember, I keep repeating it to myself and am now wondering if I will dream about it.  As with anything its now time to find a buyer.  At times I might drift away from the focal point of my domain portfolio but in this case I feel that it was worth it. :)

Everyone clap your hands to the future of 4ny.us, as you might just locate that big new years party you’ve been looking to attend or perhaps you wanted to visit new york one of these days!  Back to focusing, maybe I will let you in on how I registered a dictionary domain at the wee hours of the morning when I was having trouble sleeping!

Selling A Domain? Use the Power!

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Quick name an industry where one individual constantly tries to do all of the work to get a given project done?  Domaining!  Ding Ding Ding!  You are a winner, of course there are many other industries where self-driven entrepreneurs also spread themselves thin like cheese on a cracker, but who’s counting?  This brings me to my point, I am not a fan of spreading myself thin.  I am an advocate of creating a business network which will allow me to perform at my best without exerting much energy.  Being a “work-a-holic” is a thing of the past.  Building businesses on automation and highly successful individuals is the now!

Recently I decided to start shopping around for potential buyers of sirloins.net, I’ve gone about this situation entirely different than I have done in the past.  I emailed a fellow domainer who has brokered several domains in the past and asked him what he felt the domain itself was worth.  After receiving the estimate I decided to give his company a shot at brokering the domain.  What a load off of my shoulders! I am able to relax a bit and concentrate on acquiring more forum domain names, without hassling myself on approaching potential buyers for sirloins!

Sometimes as domainers we tend to spread ourselves thin, ignoring that there are other individuals within our business network who can help expedite processes.  Using the power of other’s to help benefit your domain portfolio will only benefit you!  So join me and reap the benefits!

Best Regards,

Jason Thompson

PS:  The company that I am using to broker sirloins.net is urlbrokers.co.uk. If you decided to use them for your brokering needs, tell Andy I said hi! :)

Discredit.org PR 2 Update

Monday, October 6th, 2008

I remember as if it were yesterday. I located a domain, one with such a powerful combination of words I just had to have it (dis & credit)! This domain had something about it, something that still to this day I wonder why it was such an easy deal to transact. I didn’t pay much for it, nor did it even seem like it was worth much, but now it is standing proudly with a 2 next to its name. A domain which was once considered a 0, no one groomed the domain enough to even give it a slight bit of traffic. You’re not supposed to fall in love with your domain names, but that I did and I will continue to fall in love with every blog entry written. I have given a new face to the word discredit and there will be a great deal of change to come (hey everyone in the US seems to like the word change)! From a flashy wordpress template to informative articles, discredit will triumph in this sea of domain blogs and continue to rise to the top! Until next time my friends, I have a date with discredit.org. ;)

Just Registered TeaForum.net

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Using the Godaddy discount code: gdp0931q (I was able to save 10%)

This domain is quite a catch for me, it was hand regged and I am quite the tea nut. This will definitely be a domain that I spend time developing. One thing I noticed was all the teatalk (TLD) were taken, so were teaforum.com and teaforum.org, but the wonderful teaforum.net was available. This makes the domain even more valuable! Time to get to work!

Domaining Conferences Start A New Trend

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Lately I’ve been getting slammed with notices that a new domain conference has started or another one is in the making. What in the world is all of this about? A word which comes to mind is money! Can it be that domain conferences are the new trend? A trend which is now becoming an avenue for the domaining world to not only take a vacation but pocket a little cash at the same time. Whatever it is there seems to be one popping up left and right. I’ve got to personally say, these conferences are not cheap. For those of you who have the ability to visit each conference, I must request a secret invite into your bat lairs! One domain conference which has definitely sparkled a twinkle in my eyes is “Domainer Mardi Gras.” This actually looks like a conference that I would be interested in going to. The conference itself is taking place February 19th through February 21, 2009 in New Orleans! Early bird registration through the end of October runs about $695. Feel free to stuff me in you luggage bag and sneak me into the back door of the convention! Although I have never been to a domaining conference I am sure they are a great networking opportunity. Business cards, beads and booze sound like a great combination to me!

Domainer Mardi Gras

Domainer Mardi Gras

In the future, I am sure some of these conferences will fall by the waste side as this industry becomes more and more commercialized. There will be a set few which actually have the capability of appealing to the masses. As with anything a domain conference would be nothing without you! If you decide to be part of this domaining conference trend, feel free to send me a few tickets!

Televise.org Payment Update

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Good news! Looks like the check has been sent out as of September 30th. I received an email from the acquisitions manager at buydomains.com yesterday in regards to this. Once the check comes I plan to copy it and hang it on my wall at home. I will use this sale as a point of motivation for future sales. I’ve got a few other domains that I will be shopping around in the near future, but at this moment I will continue to acquire more forum domains.

Best Regards,

Jason Thompson
