Fighting For Business In A Tough Economy

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

You see it in the news, reporters constantly covering the tough economic state we are currently living in.  For me personally, I decided to ignore all of the negative media attention on the economy but this can only get you so far.  Today I actually found myself in a position where I was fighting for business.  The tough economy actually put me into a position where a printing client of mine was shopping the quote around for flyers that I provided him with.  He went right to craigslist where a stampede of designers and printers were eagerly awaiting to undercut my price.  Some go as far to discount there prices so deep that it would cost more money and time to try to even compete with them.  The unfortunate situation here is the majority of deeply discounted prices that my client was receiving will actually reflect as well in the quality of work rendered.  If you pay a cheap price for quality work you normally receive cheap work with a lack of attention to detail.  So what am I to do in such a situation?  I decided to storm the gates with my battalion and fight for the business that is rightfully mine.  My client complimented me on the last design and print job that I worked on for him and is simply looking to save a few bucks to have the same type of quality rendered once again.  So as I storm the gates with my troops I have asked him the simply question of what price-point will I need to meet to move forward with you on this project?  His answer was not direct, but he did provide what others were charging on craigslist and I just might have to continue to fight for this business instead of waiving the white flag!
