Geo Directional Domains I Almost Enterted In a BIG Way!

Friday, May 15th, 2009

This morning was a very productive one for me.  Today I almost found myself entering into geo directional domains in a tremendous way.  What sparked me to get into this was the bido.com auction for eastoakland.com that went for over $500 or so.  Many of the bido experts including myself felt it was worth a great deal more than this.  Anyhow you now know would created my spark, now what halted it?  The word central halted it.  The only geo directional domains available for the united states were ones that included the word central.  Now the problem with this is I am quite skeptical about about the word central.  How many people really think of the word central when typing in a city let alone a state?  So I did some comparative analysis on this and came up with the conclusion that unless you own South Central Los Angeles it really isn’t worth the time or money trying to develop it.  Don’t get me wrong there are searches for some of the central areas of a state, but too commonly I am finding that people would rather type in the basic north, south, east, west combinations.  My loss today is your gain, I spent hours today look at what state geo directional domains are still available.  If you feel definite about the central domain as many other domainers obviously do since a number of the south central state domain combinations are taken, here is a list of available domains for you to register:

Alright, after pondering to register these domains I decided against it!  But I did find a great domain name at an incredible value.  I now am the proud owner of NorthPasadena.com not bad for a reg fee!  Ok, Ok, I had a little help and literally spent several hours of the day scanning for geo directional domains on a drop list.  So there it is I actually got one!

Domain Name Dollar Store

Presenting: Eight Motives Domain Investment Group

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Today I set a goal to make a professional presence for the domaining division of my company.  I did just that and am quite proud of the outcome considering I don’t program!  I am however a good graphic designer and I was definitely able to put a site together which domainers and end-users alike will appreciate.  I present to you the new Eight Motives Domain Investment Group website located at:

www.emdig.com

The site of course is still a work in progress.  The next step is to install a domain portfolio management script and input all of my domains which I currently hold in my portfolio into the interface.  I am also brainstorming creative ways to build an email list full of potential domainers and investors.  The email newsletter would also be informative covering different aspects of the domaining industry.  My whole goal for this website was to provide for a more professional presence, to present domain names as an investment for serious acquisitions to take place.

Domaining Buzz

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

The domaining buzz is back and today after watching a Bido auction I was actually inspired by the final bidder who purchased translate.co.in for $375.  The final bidder goes by the name LintonInvestments.  I decided to do a search on there name and it returned exactly what I was looking for and that was there main website which showcases there company as a domain investment company.  I felt that this was the perfect time for me to actually into the domaining world with a professional appearance as opposed to just a disgruntled blog so i have decided to register EMDIG.COM, which stands for Eight Motives Domain Investment Group.  Eight Motives, LLC is the actual company name that I hold which currently has its fingers in several different industries.  I want EMDIG.COM to the be the division which focuses in on domaining, a simple website which displays my domain portfolio along with a little history about the company.  I will also print up a few business card, perhaps a 200 - 300 just for the oddball occurrence that I meet domainers while walking down the street. Anyways, I am glad that I have taken this step and will spend the day creating a simple website with the details other domainers might be interested in.  Of course the discredit blog isn’t going to go anywhere, I have way to much fun being able to speak my mind on this blog!

Bido Guest Speaker (Online Chatroom Log)

Friday, May 8th, 2009

For those of you who did not have a chance to visit the Bido chatroom today, I went ahead and saved the log.  I definitely had a great time being a Bido guest speaker and plan on doing it again in the near future.  Not only was I able to share some of my experiences, I was also able to network with other domainers.  It was a win win situation for all parties involved.

Welcome back!

[10:02] Jason Thompson: getting a great deal of media attention
[10:02] Art: Is that someting you are still interested in?
[10:03] Art: could be rather lucrative
[10:03] Hinc: Howdy
[10:03] Jason Thompson: Definitely, but I realized over time I have more fun starting projects then finishing them
[10:03] Jason Thompson: ;)
[10:03] Jason Thompson: Domaining is perfect for me
[10:03] Art: Domaining is now your primary source of income?
[10:04] Jason Thompson: I also run a graphic design business which helps supplement my domain addiction
[10:04] Art: each of those businesses could help each other
[10:04] Jason Thompson: Definitely they’ve proven to go hand in hand
[10:05] sanbio: <—- away
[10:05] Art: start a dev shop and you are all set
[10:06] Art: Jason, what is your background (pre domaining, that is)?
[10:07] Jason Thompson: I hold a BS in Computer Information Systems
[10:07] Jason Thompson: I come from the IT industry
[10:07] Jason Thompson: mainly systems integration and networking
[10:07] Art: That is pretty handy in this industry
[10:08] Jason Thompson: I am actually prepping for law school soon
[10:08] Art: Do you do any development of your domains?
[10:08] Art: that is interesting
[10:08] Jason Thompson: The main domains that I develop are forum based
[10:08] Art: we have a few lawyers who are Bido memebers
[10:08] Jason Thompson: www.talkwebhosts.com is a domain I used to own
[10:09] Jason Thompson: I sold it to the maker’s of client exec a well known hosting billing panel
[10:09] Art: So it’s no longer a forum site?
[10:09] Jason Thompson: it now serves as a redirect
[10:09] bemarnet: Hi all
[10:09] Jason Thompson: for one of the largest hosting forums out there
[10:10] Art: bemarnet, hello
[10:10] Jason Thompson: that was my first x,xxx sale
[10:10] Art: nice
[10:11] Art: Jason, what are some of the domains you own?
[10:12] Jason Thompson: A few of my favorites are creditnews.us
[10:12] Jason Thompson: anxietytalk.net
[10:13] Jason Thompson: discounttalk.com
[10:13] Jason Thompson: nbaforum.info
[10:13] Jason Thompson: sportsmagazine.us
[10:14] Jason Thompson: starcrafttalk.com
[10:14] Art: are any of them developed at the moment?
[10:14] Jason Thompson: not at the moment
[10:14] bemarnet: as I can see, you are a great fan of .us
[10:14] Art: creditnews.us - could be a good time for that one
[10:14] Jason Thompson: definitely
[10:14] Jason Thompson: i get most of my domains off of drop lists
[10:15] Jason Thompson: creditnews was one of the lucky ones
[10:15] Bido: Current bid: US $22.00
[10:15] Art: any specific extensions that you favor?
[10:15] Jason Thompson: I tend to like .us and .info
[10:16] Jason Thompson: because it provides for a better selection of available premium names
[10:16] Art: that’s true
[10:16] Art: you see alot of growth potential in .us in the coming years?
[10:17] Jason Thompson: I do see a great deal of potential in the .us extension
[10:17] Art: All, any questions for Jason, please fire away…
[10:17] bemarnet: how do you see the potencial of .us?
[10:18] Bido: Current bid: US $32.00
[10:18] Jason Thompson: As far as the .us extension is concerned I see the potential for both geo and categorey killer based keywords.
[10:18] Jason Thompson: If you focus on those two targets the potential is limitless
[10:19] Art: Jason, other than .us, what other ccTLDs do you like?
[10:19] Adnan: how you see .in or .co.in domains
[10:19] Jason Thompson: i think .in will have its day
[10:20] Jason Thompson: its a little soon to tell thus far
[10:20] Adnan: far future or near future :)
[10:20] Jason Thompson: near future
[10:20] Art: Jason Thompson, do you own any .co or .co.ins?
[10:20] Jason Thompson: i used to own a .co.uk
[10:20] Jason Thompson: that’s when I was developing a site named clubberlist
[10:20] Adnan: I registered scary.in not sure if it has any value though
[10:21] Jason Thompson: i think that is a great domain name
[10:21] Jason Thompson: but then again i feel to take advantage of .in
[10:21] Jason Thompson: you need to focus in on the region
[10:21] Jason Thompson: too many generic domain names are being registered for .in which have little to no substance
[10:21] Jason Thompson: as the india’s economy grows
[10:22] Jason Thompson: so will the in extension
[10:22] Adnan: will you explain a bit “region” or geo
[10:22] Jason Thompson: sure
[10:22] Jason Thompson: When you zone in on the region of an extension
[10:22] Jason Thompson: lets say for .us
[10:22] Jason Thompson: it can be anything from a particular landmark
[10:22] Jason Thompson: to the section of a city
[10:23] Jason Thompson: and for me a street name
[10:23] Adnan: i have a domain myny.us, does it fall in your region definition?
[10:23] Jason Thompson: it does with the exception of my
[10:23] Jason Thompson: :)
[10:23] Adnan: :)
[10:23] Jason Thompson: i own 4ny.us
[10:23] Adnan: cool
[10:23] Art: Jason, how about .mobi? You a fan?
[10:23] Jason Thompson: i am a fan of .mobi when it comes to his music
[10:24] Jason Thompson: hehe
[10:24] Jason Thompson: and maybe the book
[10:24] Art: ha ha
[10:24] Adnan: :)
[10:24] Jason Thompson: other than that i don’t see .mobi going too far
[10:24] Val: Hello
[10:24] Jason Thompson: Hi Val
[10:24] Art: In some parts of the world, many people have web enabled phones
[10:24] Art: and no pcs
[10:25] Jason Thompson: Very true
[10:25] Val: not Val here today, her husband. Is that ok?
[10:25] Jason Thompson: then the extension should be .web
[10:25] Jason Thompson: :)
[10:25] Jason Thompson: haha
[10:25] Art: sure, “Val”, welcome
[10:25] Jason Thompson: there is something about the 4 letter extension
[10:25] Jason Thompson: which throws domains off for me
[10:25] Jason Thompson: less conventiant
[10:25] Jason Thompson: conveniant
[10:25] Val: my name is Algis :-) sorry for this confussion, I was thinking making another account just for a chat would be too much.
[10:26] Art: Not a problem, Algis
[10:26] Val: is there a chance to register .con ?
[10:26] Art: got any questions for Jason?
[10:26] sanbio: I do
[10:26] igar2k: yeah, jason, what do you think about IdentitySearch.us or IDSearch.us?
[10:27] sanbio: Jason how did you start your network of buyers>
[10:27] Jason Thompson: I will answer sanbio’s first
[10:27] Jason Thompson: and igar second
[10:27] Jason Thompson: sanbio as far as the network of buyers
[10:27] Jason Thompson: i started a blog
[10:27] Jason Thompson: called discredit.org
[10:28] Jason Thompson: i literally purchased this domain name from a user on namepros because it is easy to remember and represents my writing style
[10:28] Jason Thompson: after frequently posting on the blog
[10:28] Jason Thompson: and connecting with a few other domainers with blogs
[10:28] Jason Thompson: i received a small following
[10:28] Jason Thompson: which i shop my domains to
[10:28] Bido: Current bid: US $32.00
[10:28] Jason Thompson: in addition to posting on both dnforum, domainstate and namepros
[10:29] Art: Do you sell your names on any other venues, like say, Bido?
[10:29] Jason Thompson: I have submitted a few domains into bido
[10:29] Jason Thompson: but none have received a response ;0
[10:29] Jason Thompson: i did sell a domain name to buydomains.com
[10:29] Art: The selection process can be rigorous
[10:29] Jason Thompson: the domain televise.org
[10:30] Art: Jason, what was your best purchase?
[10:30] Jason Thompson: There have been a couple
[10:30] Val: This is complicated. Bido don’t want low amount names listed, cause it gives low commissions. And users dont’ want to submit expensive games and gamble if it will bid up high or not
[10:31] Val: not sure how you call this circle in English
[10:31] Jason Thompson: I have registered stockmarkettalk.com
[10:31] Jason Thompson: and proxynames.com
[10:31] Jason Thompson: those were my two favorites
[10:31] Jason Thompson: which i no longer own
[10:31] Val: I suppose art was asking about the names you purchased on aftermarket, not hand registered
[10:32] Art: either way
[10:32] Jason Thompson: I don’t really purchase domain names on aftermarket
[10:32] theoretical: how do I submit domains to bido if I own multiple extensions/variations and I want them to be sold as a pair/group?
[10:32] Sahar: Val, we’re not concerned about low amount names right now. Our main concern is to make sure things work and dont break, that market decides, and that auctions get extreme exposure within the community to command the most they will today. It doesnt matter if name goes for 30$ or 3K, as long as the rest fits well.
[10:33] Val: Sahar I can say that getting things work and dont break is accomplished. It’s time to get serious names and buyers on bido.
[10:33] Adnan: Jason Thompson, how will be a domain like citydirectory.cctld
[10:34] Art: theoretical, we aren’t yet set up for selling pairs
[10:34] Sahar: Val, we can only deal with what is being submitted. If the community want better names they should submit them.
[10:34] Art: but stay tuned
[10:34] Val: after all users are interested in good deals and not stable backend. from users perspective
[10:34] Jason Thompson: Adnan I think city directories are great investments
[10:34] Jason Thompson: are you currently working on one?
[10:34] igar2k: I agree with Sahar
[10:34] Val: Sahar you think names like FitnessVacation.net or YogaVacation.net are ok for bido?
[10:35] Adnan: will you repfer .com or cctld when the doamin name is in the language of that country
[10:35] Sahar: Val, i dont know, im not the one deciding
[10:35] Sahar: you can submit and see
[10:35] Jason Thompson: i prefer the .cctld
[10:35] Bido: Current bid: US $36.00
[10:35] Val: I am just asking for your own opinion if I may
[10:35] ZandyMan: Sahar, can you share the decision making process in terms of what names are accepted?
[10:35] ZandyMan: is it done by 1 person, by committe? are certain extensions given preference?
[10:35] Adnan: i am interested in above question too :)
[10:35] Sahar: I have no opinion on this really, it’s not what I do or good at, evaluating domains
[10:35] ZandyMan: Big up everyone by the way
[10:36] igar2k: ok, talking about the change of .co.in, and now .in taking hold… how do you see .com.mx fairing against its new .mx branding? This is for Jason
[10:36] Sahar: ZandyMan, bido team.. few decide, not one person
[10:36] Art: theoretical, please email me about your question (art@bido.com)
[10:37] Art: The commitee has a little cabin behind Bido hq
[10:37] ZandyMan: Sahar, did you see yourself with hair this morning? That pic was hilarious
[10:37] Sahar: :)
[10:37] Art: we know they’ve decided on a name when the black smoke comes out of the chimney
[10:37] Jason Thompson: Whelp
[10:37] Sahar: ZandyMan, i saw.. its funny pic!
[10:37] Val: is bido team working on salary or percent from bido % from sales or for idea?
[10:37] Jason Thompson: .mx will definitely take a great deal of potential away from .com.mx
[10:37] theoretical: art - will do
[10:38] Art: Jason, are you more of a buyer, seller, or holder of domains?
[10:38] Jason Thompson: I tend to hold onto my domain names
[10:38] Art: waiting for the right buyer?
[10:38] Jason Thompson: both waiting and developing are my main objectives
[10:38] Val: .mx will be a lesson to people who invested like mad in .com.***
[10:38] Sahar: In any event, Bido is evolving to serve the community better. We don’t like the process of us choosing what goes to auction just as much as any of you. So, things will change, and its in the works. It takes time though to work thigns out as we’re very tech driven, that is, a change has to be platform wide. So it takes a little longer, but it wil lbe done right.
[10:39] Art: Jason, how many domains do you currently have in your portfolio?
[10:39] Val: Sahar, just put it to a vote between submitted names. And allow relisting of names. making it social for what you want or don’t want
[10:39] Jason Thompson: I own just over 70 domain names currently
[10:39] Val: so say this Friday we vote for a name that will be up next Friday
[10:39] Val: if that makes sense
[10:40] sanbio: Can I ask a question please
[10:40] sanbio: ?
[10:40] Jason Thompson: sure
[10:40] Art: please do!
[10:40] Sahar: Val, we thought of that but its short term solution as we’re working hard on opening the platform. Resources, as with any company, are limited. Our focus is on whats most important and that is, opening the platform for multiple auctions and later for individuals to control their own auctions.
[10:40] ZandyMan: Sahar, I like that Bido picks the names…I just think some people don’t understand why some names are picked and others are not
[10:40] sanbio: I just started www.dnlivebid.com to build a community through video chat. WHat are your thoughts on that?
[10:40] Bido: Current bid: US $40.00
[10:40] ZandyMan: there seems to by no rhyme or reason
[10:40] Jason Thompson: I can tell you that the next step in domaining is video
[10:41] sanbio: I think so too Jason
[10:41] Jason Thompson: It’s interesting that you actually have gone that route sanbio
[10:41] sanbio: I would sure like your contact info
[10:41] Jason Thompson: you are definitely ahead of the curb with that
[10:41] Art: What do you mean by video? Live auctions?
[10:41] Sahar: ZandyMan, we can only pick from what is being submitted. Sometime in short period better names submitted, sometime the inventory is really bad. So you see few good days, few bad days, etc.
[10:41] Val: we were seriously considering buying videoblogs.com 2 years ago. but decided against it
[10:41] sanbio: Stickam offers video chat for fee that you can embed
[10:41] Jason Thompson: Art video used in many different implementations
[10:42] sanbio: free
[10:42] sanbio: I meant
[10:42] Jason Thompson: sanbio sure check my bio
[10:42] Art: but as far as domaining goes?
[10:42] sanbio: Tx Jason;)
[10:42] Jason Thompson: my information is there for you feel free to shoot me a domain name
[10:42] Jason Thompson: woops an email
[10:42] Jason Thompson: ;)
[10:42] Sahar: Jason Thompson, we had one day a video here on Bido, it went great! This was when Rick Schwartz was on. We will do more of those.
[10:42] Sahar: Matter of fact, I just saw the name that will go on later today on Bido, talking about videos, you guys gonna like this one.
[10:42] sanbio: stickam.com is free Sahar
[10:42] Jason Thompson: Video in domaining has yet to really develop much
[10:42] Jason Thompson: Sahar that’s a great move
[10:42] sanbio: millions of viewers
[10:42] Val: Sahar, you have plans to develop a platform similar to sedo? name auction, focused not just on regular users but domainers as well. if you do - we can cooperate on creating that probably
[10:43] Hinc: Sounds like a brill idea Val, im sick of sedo lol
[10:43] sanbio: Anyway my dnlivebid.com is an idea
[10:43] sanbio: I think it would work for Bido too
[10:44] Art: Jason, what do you think of the state of the domain market today?
[10:44] Val: there is no good platform at this time. sedo, new namedrive ndx, afternic, tdnam. missed a good niche solution
[10:44] Val: even snapnames have weak points
[10:44] Sahar: Val, we’re very different than sedo and plan to stay that way. By end of year the picture should be clear of where we’re going with bido.
[10:44] Jason Thompson: I think the state of the domain market today reflects that of the real world markets
[10:44] Hinc: Indeed
[10:44] Jason Thompson: currently I have noticed a decline in domain purchases
[10:44] sanbio: BIDO is a good business model
[10:44] Val: Sahar, I am not talking about bido. but another startup. separate project
[10:45] Jason Thompson: as well as the prices that domains are going for
[10:45] Jason Thompson: people have less money to spend on domaining
[10:45] sanbio: I agree Jason
[10:45] Art: it’s a good time to buy then
[10:45] Jason Thompson: definitely
[10:45] sanbio: I am buying like crazy
[10:45] sanbio: Bought 500 i past two weeks
[10:45] Sahar: Val, we’re not building any other auction platform right now.. if thats the question. No interest either, need to stay on track with what we have started
[10:45] Jason Thompson: there are some great domains dropping daily
[10:45] sanbio: Jason I agree
[10:45] Jason Thompson: the domaining industry is like realestate
[10:46] sanbio: I picked up elosangeles.net
[10:46] Art: Yeah, I suppose people who are short on cash let the name registrations go
[10:46] sanbio: for $9
[10:46] Jason Thompson: east los angeles nice
[10:46] Jason Thompson: :)
[10:46] Art: good one
[10:46] Hinc: Just submitted some domains for a potential Bido debut :)
[10:46] sanbio: If it sells for over $1K I am happy
[10:46] Jason Thompson: i say it will go for mid xxx to low x,xxx
[10:46] Art: Good luck, Hinc
[10:46] Jason Thompson: good domain name indeed
[10:46] Art: Jason, where to you see the domain name industry going over the next few years?
[10:47] Jason Thompson: Right now major industry players are dictating this market
[10:47] Art: How so?
[10:47] Jason Thompson: Because in this market
[10:47] Adnan: do you see a place for a newcomer with little investment to be successfull in domaining?
[10:48] Jason Thompson: the domainers who get the most attention tend to have the most connections to sell a domain name
[10:48] Jason Thompson: its only right that a major industry player like Rick will not only receive the best domain names
[10:48] Bido: Current bid: US $40.00 - 12 minutes to go
[10:48] Jason Thompson: but will also have the ability to sell them just as quick
[10:48] Jason Thompson: to the highest bidder
[10:48] Jason Thompson: i feel newcomers will have to work harder
[10:48] sanbio: I agree Jason
[10:48] Jason Thompson: and focus in on building domain portfolios
[10:49] sanbio: and developing them into sites
[10:49] Jason Thompson: instead of selling domain names on namepros for reg fees
[10:49] Adnan: raw domains or developed domains?
[10:49] Adnan: ok
[10:49] Jason Thompson: both are great, but developing domains is where it is at
[10:49] sanbio: May I share an experience similiar to your blog Jason and Bido?
[10:49] Jason Thompson: sure
[10:50] sanbio: I own www.seniorcitizens.org
[10:50] sanbio: I have grown it to over 5000 members
[10:50] sanbio: AARP has approched me to buy it
[10:50] sanbio: approached
[10:50] sanbio: I have declined
[10:50] sanbio: I think 2-3 years
[10:50] sanbio: it will be worth much more
[10:50] sanbio: but started as a blog
[10:51] sanbio: Done
[10:51] Jason Thompson: that’s the perfect domain name
[10:51] Jason Thompson: and the .org extension suits it well
[10:51] Art: nice, sanbio!
[10:51] sanbio: tx guys
[10:51] Jason Thompson: you made a great decision holding onto it
[10:51] Jason Thompson: ask me about future projects Art
[10:51] Jason Thompson: ;)
[10:51] Adnan: do you guys ever tried ppc to promote your domains for selling?
[10:52] Art: Jason, what are your future plans? any new projects?
[10:52] Jason Thompson: Adnan I haven;t
[10:52] Jason Thompson: Good Question!
[10:52] Jason Thompson: I currently am working on a project which will increase the publicity and selling potential for domain names
[10:52] Art: sounds interesting
[10:53] Jason Thompson: I am going to bring a twist that the industry has never seen before
[10:53] sanbio: nice Jason
[10:53] ZandyMan: Random question…anyone here have any experience buying or selling large targeted consumer email lists?
[10:53] Adnan: wow
[10:53] sanbio: Like out of the box stuff
[10:53] Jason Thompson: definitely
[10:53] sanbio: Emails lists don’t work
[10:53] Art: Jason Thompson, what is your time frame to roll this out?
[10:53] sanbio: IMHO
[10:53] Jason Thompson: it will make everyone become a domainer
[10:53] Jason Thompson: I give it 3 - 4 months
[10:53] Jason Thompson: the idea is simple
[10:53] ZandyMan: sanbio, what do you mean?
[10:54] Jason Thompson: but it adds much needed publicity for this industry
[10:54] Adnan: i hope it wont over saturate the market :)
[10:54] Jason Thompson: less technical and more visual
[10:54] Jason Thompson: no buy it might find you a buyer
[10:54] Jason Thompson: :)
[10:54] Art: Do you have a name for the project?
[10:54] sanbio: @ zandman offline ok?
[10:54] ZandyMan: sure
[10:54] sanbio: ty
[10:54] ZandyMan: you on gchat?
[10:55] Bido: Current bid: US $40.00 - five minutes left
[10:55] sanbio: 2PM dnlivebid.com today
[10:55] sanbio: I will be there
[10:55] ZandyMan: lol, ok
[10:55] Art: Jason Thompson, what are your thoughts on today’s name on auction, juera.com?
[10:55] Jason Thompson: My thoughts are that if it were guera
[10:56] Jason Thompson: there would be more bids
[10:56] Jason Thompson: :)
[10:56] Art: gotcha
[10:56] Jason Thompson: but none the less good luck to the buyer
[10:56] Art: we like transparancy here at Bido
[10:56] igar2k: the buyer should flip it to JueraLimited.com, that would be the best bet
[10:57] igar2k: sorry, Juera Limited
[10:57] Jason Thompson: that would be a good idea
[10:57] Jason Thompson: but i think in these times
[10:57] ZandyMan: potential trademark issue?
[10:57] Jason Thompson: less companies are spending money on such things
[10:57] Art: Jason, are you attending any industry events in the near future?
[10:57] sanbio: again, thnak you for your time and nic emeeting you Jason… tx BIDO
[10:57] sanbio: nice
[10:57] Jason Thompson: Art once I develop the new project

[10:59] Jason Thompson: :)
[10:59] theoretical: You hear stories from end users all the time though that even when they know how to buy a domain in the aftermarket, they just don’t value it appropriately. They don’t understand why a name is worth $1k or whatever.
[10:59] Adnan: will be in touch with Jason, if you dont mind :)
[10:59] Jason Thompson: sounds good
[10:59] Jason Thompson: no problem
[10:59] Bido: Current bid: US $40.00 Less than one minute
[10:59] Jason Thompson: theoretical very true
[10:59] theoretical: they just go and register the .net for a standard reg fee or add another word to the domain name.

Fighting For Business In A Tough Economy

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

You see it in the news, reporters constantly covering the tough economic state we are currently living in.  For me personally, I decided to ignore all of the negative media attention on the economy but this can only get you so far.  Today I actually found myself in a position where I was fighting for business.  The tough economy actually put me into a position where a printing client of mine was shopping the quote around for flyers that I provided him with.  He went right to craigslist where a stampede of designers and printers were eagerly awaiting to undercut my price.  Some go as far to discount there prices so deep that it would cost more money and time to try to even compete with them.  The unfortunate situation here is the majority of deeply discounted prices that my client was receiving will actually reflect as well in the quality of work rendered.  If you pay a cheap price for quality work you normally receive cheap work with a lack of attention to detail.  So what am I to do in such a situation?  I decided to storm the gates with my battalion and fight for the business that is rightfully mine.  My client complimented me on the last design and print job that I worked on for him and is simply looking to save a few bucks to have the same type of quality rendered once again.  So as I storm the gates with my troops I have asked him the simply question of what price-point will I need to meet to move forward with you on this project?  His answer was not direct, but he did provide what others were charging on craigslist and I just might have to continue to fight for this business instead of waiving the white flag!

A Few Domain Drops I Registered

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

This evening was definitely a productive one.  After going to the gym I decided to take a stab at searching a few forum, talk and dictionary domain names.  Since I didn’t find any catches, I went ahead and started searching for domains that ended in news, guide, magazine, etc.  The guide keyword provided too many drops for it to be advantageous for me to even think about searching through, so I eliminated it from my keyword list.  The news and magazine keywords returned  just what the doctor ordered.  Again I have to say that I am amazed that domains like these were available for the taking.  I was able to register the following domains spending about an hour or so searching through drop lists:

creditnews.us
pornmagazine.us
sportsmagazine.us

With all of the credit news in the United States currently circulating at this time I do have to say that it is close to being a category killer.  Both porn and sports magazine are category killers.  Each of these domain names is definitely worth by-far more than I paid to register them.  I feel that the three together are well worth low to mid $x,xxx without development but with development the sky is the limit.

I learned something today and that was to broaden my searches and start using a mixture of powerful keywords to find great domain name combinations.

May 1st Goes Down In History

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Yes, the triumphant bells of victory are ringing!  I am now a Bido Expert!  You will now be enlightened with my daily puns on the wonderful Bido auction site.  It was only yesterday that I found myself blogging about domains on the Bido auction site, patiently tapping my foot eagerly awaiting the time that I too could post on directly on the site.  Now I can and the world of domaining will never be the same again!  But first, I must type my bio and prepare my profile before the fun and games can begin!

On a side note a domainer by the name of Gary Lach has solicited me with domain SPAM!  Here is the email message that I received from him early this morning:

from    gary lach <garylach@gmail.com>
to    eightmotives@gmail.com
date    Mon, May 4, 2009 at 6:21 AM
subject    www.DevilForums.com
mailed-by    gmail.com

Hello , I am  offering the above name for sale at $150 , it was a forum at one time with  1,500  members  .

If interested please get back to me .

Regards

Gary Lach.

If there is one thing in the world that I can not stand it is SPAM, let alone domaining SPAM.  He obviously checked my whois information for a domain name that I own, devilforum.net and figured he might be able to email me blindly about the domain he has for sale.  Gary this was not a very professional thing to do, I am actually quite disturbed that the industry has domainers who use solicitation tactics to sell domain names instead of taking the appropriate routes to find a buyer.  Thanks but no thanks!  Now onto the quality of domain you are selling (spamming).  Lets be honest here Gary, the domain name devilforums.com does not have any range when it comes to the domain name devilforum.com, I guess what I am saying here is that you’ve added an “s” to a domain name that would otherwise be quality and completely diminished the value of the domain name.  Indirectly you’ve actually increased the overall value of my devilforum.net because you have registered a similar TLD and it makes your domain registration look a little defeating.  Anyhow, I would laugh if anyone were to buy the domain you are offering for more than $20, the mere fact that you are soliciting the domain name to unexpected candidates and are trying to charge them $150 for such a name proves to me that such a transaction has SCAM written all over it.

Off to Bido I go!

Best Regards,

Jason Thompson
