First Domain Theft Arrest Ever!

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Daniel Goncalves Pimp SlappedYou might notice that I have included an exclamation mark in my title. I’ve done this because this is truly a historic event for the domaining world. A person named Daniel Goncalves, 25 years of age, residing in Union Township has been charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition, theft of identity, and computer theft. These are all crimes which are of the “second degree.”

The New Jersey State Place Cyber Crimes Unit arrested Mr. Goncalves on July 30 for stealing a domain name. After the arrest, a search warrant was also utilized at his residence. Now that I have given you a bit of the story, I bet you guys are wondering what domain name Daniel ended up stealing, not to mention the domain name he will most likely be serving time for! He stole P2P.com, a domain which was owned by Marc Ostrofsky, Albert Angel and his wife Lesli Angel. If Daniel only knew that Albert Angel was a lawyer, he just might of gotten away with this illegal act. Shame on you Daniel, not only did you steal a domain name but you decided to steal from three partners and you simply didn’t do your due diligence! You my friend are now the focus of Internet jokes everywhere! You stole from a lawyer! Who in there right mind does such a thing? That’s like issuing a police officer a ticket for speeding! (Sorry, I got a little carried away there.)

Wait! The story gets even better! It turns out that Mr. Goncalves is also a computer technician for a law firm. Isn’t that ironic! He hacked into the Angel’s AOL account and was able to grant himself access to GoDaddy. Yes, this superior hacker requested his login details be sent. Is it me that just finds this funny? For someone who is attempting to steal a domain, shouldn’t he be able to hack GoDaddy without the need for the owner’s email? Daniel Goncalves you have failed once again. Your dumby tactics have now granted you the label of “PIMP SLAPPED”. By requesting the login details to the Angel’s GoDaddy account, Daniel created an electronic paper trail. Such a trail is now being used to convict the domain thief, although he has posted bail for $60,000 pending his court date.

Alright, now lets get ready for the GRAND FINALE! Towards the end of 2006, Mr Goncalves placed P2P.com up for sale on eBay.com, where the domain sold for $111,000. Guess who purchased the domain name? An NBA basketball player named Mark Madsen, who plays for the Los Angeles Clippers. So now we have, a domain thief who stole a domain name from a lawyer and two other partners that decides to sell the domain that he stole on eBay where an NBA basketball player purchases it. This is starting to sound like a “Dateline” special. I can see it now, a show entitled “To Catch A Domain Thief”.
